The good news is, bank holiday season is just around the corner. However, the bad news is, all the Easter chocolate you scoff and all the cheeky cocktails you drink during those delicious long weekends could be having a detrimental effect on your skin. Especially if you already suffer from sensitivity, sugar and alcohol can be bad for your skin.
So, what exactly do two of the most tempting – and addictive – substances around actually do to our skin? Furthermore, how can we have a good time while minimising the affects of sugar and alcohol?
But why? Refined sugar is a simple carbohydrate. Simple carbohydrates cause insulin levels to spike, leading to a burst of inflammation around the body. The inflammation then produces enzymes that break down collagen and elastin, stiffening the skin and leading to wrinkling, sagging and premature ageing. Prioritising a good skincare routine using products from Neutral 0% Sensitive Skin Bundle can help minimise the affects of this inflammation, without aggravating sensitive skin.
But why? Testosterone caused by too much refined sugar can also affect water binding. This means that your skin appears less oxygenated, leading to dark circles and a generally sallow appearance. Alcohol has a similar affect, causing capillaries to dilate. In particular, red wine can lead to “wine face” but drinking lots of water can counteract the effects.
But why? Too much sugar, from either food or alcohol, can weaken the immune system. This means that the body finds it harder to fight off bacteria. The result? Greasy breakouts. Furthermore, there’s the fact that sugar also creates more testosterone, which makes pores larger and skin oilier. You might think your zitty teenaged days are behind you. Nevertheless, much sugar can lead to nasty surprises when you look in the mirror in the morning. Using Neutral 0% Face Wash will calm and cleanse your skin, without stripping away essential moisture.
But why? Just two alcoholic drinks a day can affect the skin, depriving it of vital vitamins and nutrients and leading to dehydration which is ultimately ageing. On top of this, it also inflames bodily tissue, creating a histamine reaction. This causes redness and leads to the telltale, flushed face of a regular drinker.
Of course, cutting out booze completely is the only real cure. But, if this isn’t an option for you, experts advise drinking spirits rather than wine and beer. Spirits leave the system faster and therefore don’t have time to cause as much damage. As a general rule, the clearer the drink, the better it is for your skin. It’s also best – for many reasons! – to only drink once or twice a week, particularly as you get older. Alcohol takes around ten times as long to leave your body when you’re 40 than when you’re 20. Sobering stuff!
The Neutral Face Wash is a gentle cleanser that leaves skin feeling comfortable and soft without stripping away essential moisture.
Neutral's Sensitive Skin Bundle combines a range of facial products dedicated to taking care of your sensitive skin. The Face Cream, Tonic, Wash and Wipes work in synergy to help keep sensitive skin free from irritation.
